Getting expedition equipment and gear through Ottawa last year proved to be a major issue as Resolute Bay had 10 outage days prior to February 15th and the replacement of the jet with an ATR on the Iqaluit to Resolute run, limited capacity, significantly. Because of this, we now have experienced assistance in Ottawa that will assist expeditions to ship equipment ahead and transferred to First Air. This will allow you to ship early and gear that contains food will be able to be shipped by the lower food mail rate. (see rates below) All equipment must be in Ottawa by the 28th of January in order to get it to Resolute Bay by the 15th of February.
The bottle neck is in Iqaluit as jet service to Iqaluit is OK, but getting it on the ATR for the flight to Resolute was the bottleneck in 2010. 2011 saw reasonable delivery but there were many blizzard days.
As a note, all shipping costs can be paid through the hotel this year to provide a one contact payment point.
It should also be noted that the larger expeditions with many members may be better served with a charter service, as at some point, commercial freight may be higher. As an example a typical First Air charter from Ottawa to Resolute bay is about $90,000. This year we are only utilizing First Air commercoal freight but if you need a reference in Resolute Bay that can handel charters, please give us a call or e-mail us and we would be glad to make a recommendation of those services locally, with this experience. We are concentrating this season on the smaller, one to 4 member expeditions but as the Spring, after march season arrives, small scientific expeditions will start to come to Resolute and we will offer customs clearing with coordination and guidence,for these expeditions.
